FAQ
Have a question? We’ve answered some of the most common questions about joining PolliePedal, fundraising and training for the event below.
About PolliePedal
Do I need to be a hard-core cyclist to join?
No, you don’t. You just need a love of cycling, a passion for helping people and a roadworthy, and recently serviced bike (is advisable). PolliePedal is not a race, you can travel at your own pace, and the rear car will always be behind the final cyclist. If you are ever needing a rest, or want to skip a leg on any day, you are welcome to pop your bike in the trailer and catch a ride in the back car.
What kind of bike do I need?
It is advisable to have a road bike. But, if you think you can, and are comfortable using a hybrid bike for the duration of the event, you are welcome to use one.
Do I need to provide my own safety gear e.g. helmet, lights etc?
Can I use my ebike?
Yes. We have had a couple of people participate using ebikes in the past. It is your responsibility to make sure the bike is charged at all times and in working order. We do not take responsibility of break downs or flat batteries on ebikes.
If I am travelling from interstate, will you collect and drop off to airport?
Yes, we will. You will just need to advise one of the team your flight details. It is advised to arrive on the Thursday mid-late morning to the closest airport (Hobart). Departure flights should be made on the Sunday, after 5:00PM from the Hobart airport. If you need an earlier flight, please discuss with one of the team members.
What time do I have to be at the starting point?
All participants who are staying on the Thursday night, should be there in time for dinner, meet and greet and briefing at approximately 6pm. If you are not staying with us on the Thursday night, but you are riding first thing Friday morning please be at the designated meeting spot by 7:30am, with your bike and any luggage.
Can I bring my car, will there be someone to drive it?
No, there will not be extra staff to drive your car from stop to stop. If you wish to take your car and leave it at the starting point, we will be able to arrange for someone to drop you back there after the ride concludes on the Sunday.
Please discuss with one of our team members to arrange.
Do I have to do all 3 days cycling?
No, you can choose to do 3, 2 or 1 day/s or part thereof. Depending on the days you are doing, if only doing part of PolliePedal, you may need to arrange your own transport to and from the points you are participating in.
Please discuss with one of our team members.
Do I need to pay for anything?
On the route there may be coffee stops, or stops at tourist attractions, wineries, venues where you may wish to purchase something, it is a great idea to have a bankcard or cash on you in your day bag
Is my entry fee refundable if I can't make it?
Fundraising
How will I reach my fundraising target?
Scared of fundraising? Feel uncomfortable asking for donations? This isn’t uncommon. A great first step is to donate to yourself and then ask your family, friends, colleagues and wider network.
There are so many other fundraising activities you can do to reach your goal. The PolliePedal team is here to help you by offering suggestions and providing resources for you to use. In our experience, people love to get behind people they know so all you have to do is ask!
What kind of fundraising activities can I do?
You can do almost anything! As long as it's legal and it's aligned with Diabetes Australia, we'd love to hear about it.
Popular ideas include:
- Trivia or Bingo Nights
- Sponsored walks, runs, or rides
- Workplace fundraising or dress-up days
- Bake sales or BBQs
- Online donation challenges
- Golf days
- Celebrations like birthdays or weddings asking for donations instead of gifts
